IKA - TD / CAMPAIGN :INTERVIEW WITH Ms: Henriette Moller Referee Director African Kurash Confedration

Interview

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF

My name is Henriette Moller.  I’m a Commander in the South African Navy stationed in Simon’s Town.

PLEASE TELL US BRIEFLY ABOUT YOUR SPORT ACTIVITIES IN SPORT?

I have stated judo at the age of 4 years.  The highlights of my judo career were being crown African Judo Champion in 1997; my participation in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens; and refereeing at the 4th World Military Games in India in 2007.  I was the African Kurash Champion from 2001 – 2004.  At the 2002 Kurash World Championships I obtained a bronze medal in the Open category.  Currenty I’m the Technical Director South African Kurash Association and the Referee Director African Kurash Association; and ranked a 3-star Kurash referee.

WHERE ARE YOU BASED AT?

I live in Cape Town, in the south of South Africa.

HOW IS THE KURASH OPERATION SYSTEM IN YOUR COUNTRY?  AS FAR AS I KNOW KURASH IS NOT FEDERATION.  HOW DO YOU OPERATE ALONE OR WITH OTHER SPORTS?

Kurash is not a federation in South Africa.  Kurash South Africa is registered through Martial Arts South Africa (MASA) as a National Federation.

WHO IS NOW IN CHARGE OF KURASH AFFAIRS IN YOUR COUNTRY?

Mr Donald Sutherland is the President Kurash South Africa.

WHAT ACTIVITIES HAVE YOU HAD IN 2019-2020?

The South African (SA) National Championships was hosted in 2019 in Pretoria.  The 2020 SA National Championships was cancelled due to the outbreak of Covid-19.  South Africa was also supposed to host the African Kurash Championships in July 2020 in Johannesburg, but this event will possibly be cancelled under the current circumstances.

HOW DO YOU FEEL WHEN WORKING WITH OTHER ITO’S ABROAD?  ARE THERE ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR BRINGING THE QUALITY HIGHER WITHIN THE ITO’S?

South Africa is very far from other countries where high level international tournaments are taking place.  Most African countries (South Africa included) do not have national funding, therefore do not have many opportunities for interaction with other ITO’s.  In order to improve the level of ITO’s in Africa, courses are held at all competitions.

ARE YOU MORE INTERESTED IN COACHING, REFEREEING OF MANAGEMENT?

It is difficult for me to choose between the three aspects as I really enjoy all three aspects.  Currently I’m still involved in all three aspects at national level; and Refereeing and Coaching at an international level.

WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR KURASH IN YOU COUNTRY?

The vision is for Kurash to be recognised as a national federation.  Access to national funding will also assist to establish more clubs throughout the country.

FINALLY HOW IS CORONA AFFECTING KURASH NOW IN YOU COUNTRY?

The South African national Covid-19 lock down regulations are very strict, and at this stage no sports activities are allowed.  People are only allowed to leave their homes between 06h00 and 09h00 to run or walk within a 5km radius from their homes.  Indications are that no organised sports activities in groups will be allowed for a very long time in future.  Individual clubs have therefore initiated home training videos to keep up the player’s fitness levels.
